Do you have auto, to survive? Is the your "iron horse" by 2012?
I, for constant drive, bought in 2006, Russia's car UAZ3163 "Patriot".
Not expensive (in 2006 he bought for $ 10000, now its price is about $ 15000), robust, and reliable car, it is convenient for both the city and the countryside. Consumes 92 gasoline or liquefied gas.
Here is my workhorse: Appearance. (There is a canopy for camouflage) Saloon car
There is an electric winch, force 4 tons and luggage space (can be used for transporting people).
But, I need a car as a post-apocalyptic survival vehicles. To survive, need a car transport with large wheels. I bought ($ 300) used vehicle UAZ 39625 (popular name BUHANKA - the so-called Russian bread, in the form of bricks). The machine is old, 1986! However, its value in the fact that it is frugal engine, which uses low-quality gasoline, an act 72-76 and even 66. Petrol which make homemade, straight distillation of crude oil. Where I live a lot of oil. Tyumen, Tatarstan, Ural, Bashkortostan. The car has a transmission 4x4. Engine working volume of 2.89 liters (power - 99 hp) After repairs and alterations ($ 900), so this was an excellent all-terrain vehicle! Only one thing saddens me that Russia's automobile inspection, does not want to give me the car registration number. While using this machine, hunting, fishing, rural areas where there are no traffic police.
In the next post, I will tell how bought armor for survival

I'd say any good suv with 4 wheel drive. Something with decent street mileage, can go off road when need be, and has a huge gas tank. Plus, all the extra room that comes with it is nice.
I guess that's why you always see the secret service use those black SUVs.

Just make sure you get an off-roader, not one of these new "soft-roader" vehicles that aren't intended to leave the city. If it has a snorkel, it'll probably be up to the task
RUS, I like the green van (reminds me of a German Hanomag, is it front wheel drive?) after the big tire converson. (but hp is a little weak to turn all those tyres IMO.) My choice is diesel engine with mechanicel fuel injector pump, not electronic fuel injector (gas or diesel), since if we have an emp you will be walking or pushing your electronic fuel injected truck . RUS has the idea with a low compression gas engine that will burn varied fuels, however it is far easier to mix something to burn in my diesel than it is a gas mixture, and better HP results. I have mine; an old Suburban 4x4 6,2l diesel to tow a trailer. Anyone considering steam power? That may be the only way to make power after shtf and all the liquid fuel is exausted world wide. Cheers, Mechanic Dutch

How about a five-speed mountain bike. All muscle power. No fuel except your own food and water. And it can go where no other vehicle can go. And it will never quit as long as you have an air pump and replacement parts.
Besides, if the world ceases to function properly, traveling long distances might not be necessary.
Oh, yeah... Hi everybody!

As I got armored vehicle
My neighbor, on the rural cottage, a very eccentric man, a good businessman. Question of survival in extreme future, not interested. But, like Fishing and hunting. He's not poor, in the pleasures does not fail. He got me on the sale of conversion of military technology, BRDM-2 armored car. In recent years, in Russia recycled and sold to the public a lot of old military vehicles. BRDM-2. Combat Reconnaissance/Patrol Vehicle. / БРДМ-2. Боевая Разведовательная Дозорная Машина.Is an amphibious armoured patrol car used by Russia and the made in Soviet Union. Specifications can be found here: (English text) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRDM-2 My neighbor bought this technique for 9000 $ and more put into repairing and tuning $ 10000. In the end, turned out beautiful, rover-amphibious armored vehicle. With a comfortable interior, convenient for fishing and hunting. However, this type of camouflage, I do not like. IMHO.
Since then, as my neighbor had this machine. My peace of mind was disturbed. "I choked Toad" (as we say in Russian, when a person is worried envy) - Envy shoots at others and wounds herself. And as I pondered the question of armored vehicles for survival. I decided to buy the same equipment. I went to a military base. I found a motor-manager, learned that it is possible to buy BRDM-2. With this military motor-manager warden, we traded for 3 days. It looked like this: 1 Day; traded. Price seller - $ 20000 - my price $ 1000. In the evening they drank a lot of vodka and a little quarrel, but not much fighting. 2 Day; traded. Price seller - $ 10000 - my price $ 1500. Much drinking and steamed in a Russian bath. 3 Day; traded. Price seller - $ 6000 - my price $ 1500 + packaging Vodka (20 bottles), we drank a lot, we invited the girls. But instead of girls, there came was his commander, gave a scandal, a warehouse is closed for 3 days. After the three of us drank a lot, fried skewers, and agreed to the price: 1500 $ + 20 bottles of vodka + 1 pig (not less than 40 kg.). And I got this beauty:
Inside the car, after the military conversion to civilian use, the view was terrible. I did not repaint the car, slightly reworked interior and engine repair (1000 $). The result was not expensive, armored vehicle, the vehicle of survival is acceptable! It is convenient to travel around the destroyed roads, cross the rivers and canals where the bridges are damaged and good protection from looters. A little video. Neighbor's car and my car.

I second that awsome and I am for sure a "choked toad" on this one. My only questions are how far will it run on 10 liters of fuel and gas or diesel engine? I like the redo of the interior, very plush. I wonder if any of these are avalable in Afganistan sitting along side the roads burnt up? What do you suppose it would cost to ship one to the US? Maybe drive it here from Siberia. Hmm maybe we should buy two as I'm sure parts are impossable to find on this continent. I have seen old British amored cars avalable at some site in US, but thay don't compare to this Soviet vehicle. Dutch

See, this is where we are coming to some important issues. You thought I was just kidding with the horse, eh?
We are talking about "an extreme survival situation". That would most likely mean "after a nuclear war, enormous earthquakes, tsunamis" or something to that effect.
What would be scarce after such an event?
Let me get started on a little list for you:
- FUEL - Spare parts - Lubrication oils - Tyres
Add you own items to the list as you go along.
A machine will be good until something goes wrong with it.
What can go wrong? - engine failure - gearbox failure - drivetrain failure - electrical and electronic failure - tires - brakes
In short, there are thousands of components that will leave you high & dry.
Then you are doubly screwed, because without the necessary parts or fuel it will not move and not only that, you are now without any means of transportation unless you have a backup plan. Such as a horse.
So, a machine is great so long as you`ve planned for years, bought and stocked up on parts, and the rest of it.
A horse needs water, grass and some care. If you have a mare and a stallion, you can get more horses. Try that with a vehicle. Its also largely self repairing. The only concern is making sure the animal survives such an event as the ones I mentioned in the beginning.
A horse is - transport - agricultural tool - general beast of burden - worst case: food.
There is a reason horse thieves were shot in the old west.
