So why do you have 10 little lines per 6 inches? Or is the 5 wide just an arbitrary to represent the trunk? If so, wouldn't a visual person put 6 rows of lines rather than 2?

e.g.

--0--

Seems to me what you have done is do a symbolic visual presentation.

I drew mine out - a tree with markers at each foot, with a star at each half point.. That's when I got the 30 mins! I tried putting it into an equation.. didn't work for me! LOL

Or never! If the catapillar keeps falling back 6 inches every time it gets to 1 foot, then it'll never get above 1 foot

 You're right. It DOES say that, doesn't it. Stirky passes and we all fail. Bloody bug keeps sliding and climbing from 1 ft back to 6" and up again. ROFL

it does not, you gob target. The statement denotes relative distance from where it started.

You're just mad coz I got a math problem right....

I wouldn't mind betting the teacher took that from a text somewhere. Anyone who could look at that question and not even get a reasonable approximation wouldn't be making questions up, they'd be copying them.

Woe unto the (mis)Education system. :(

Its even in the internet

No, everyone here is wrong.

"It takes it 2 minutes to climb 1 foot."

Got it

"but it falls back 6 inches each time it reaches 1 foot."

Irrelevant to the question of the problem as we have already concluded it only takes it 2 minutes to reach 1 foot.

2 minutes multiplied by 8 feet is 16 minutes.

Yeah... but no. That 6 inch slide back IS relevant. It means in actual fact the caterpillar can only achieve 6 inches in 2 minutes.

I'm a bit puzzled at your response. Perhaps the (mis)education system has been bad for longer than I thought?

But it's 1 foot of 1-8 feet, not 1 foot of half feet between 1-8.

The 6 inch slip has already been calculated into the 2 minutes for each foot.

But that is specifically stated not to be the case...

You're trying to calculate in the slide as it crawls, but it is not how the problem is worded.
