Human Genetic Anomalies: Unusual Genetic Divergence? (Daly City, Ca. October 2009)

DALY CITY, Calif. -- A Daly City couple is beaming after becoming the proud parents of a healthy but incredibly rare baby boy this month. Baby Kamani Hubbard has six-fully formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet. It's called "polydactyly" -- extra digits -- not an uncommon genetic trait, but Bay Area doctors say they've never seen a case so remarkable. Born at San Francisco's Saint Luke's Hospital three weeks ago, Hubbarb seemed so perfect at birth no one noticed. "Nurses and doctors, looked so normal they couldn't tell, they told me he was six pounds in good health, that was all they said," said Miryoki Gross, Hubbard’s mother. But his dad Kris Hubbard noticed this spectacularly rare case of polydactyly: 6-perfect fingers on each hand and six perfect toes on each foot, which went well beyond a general trait that runs in his family.

"Some family member have had six fingers, not completely developed. But not the toes," said the 34-year-old Hubbard, a postal worker. In fact Hubbard himself had nubs of sixth fingers removed as a child as these non-functional digits routinely are. But baby Hubbard's case is so astonishingly rare according to doctors, and because the extra digits are functional, it's not a deformity to be discarded. "It's merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing," said Dr. Michael Treece and St. Luke's Hospital Pediatrician. "I would be tempted to leave those fingers in place. I realize children would tease each other over the slightest things, and having extra digits on each hand is more than slight. But imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be. Imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist. If nothing else, think of their typing skills." Kamani's mother says she hasn't had time to absorb this; her baby's specialness didn't even show up on prenatal ultrasounds. "I heard nothing before I gave birth so I'm still in shock, kinda," said Gross. "I just want him to see what greatness will be in store for him," said the baby's proud father. The Florida Marlins' pitcher Antonio Alfonseca, blues guitarist Hound Dog Taylor and several remarkable figures in history have had polydactyly. This little guy may, at the very least, help others grasp the importance of embracing difference.

Collapsing Earth: The Day the Earth opened up (Guatemala City, 2007)

On the 23rd of February 2007, a 330 foot deep sinkhole swallowed up over a dozen homes in a crowded neighborhood in Guatemala City. Over 1000 people were evacuated and two people were killed. The giant hole emitted a foul stench, tremors and loud noises. The authorities blamed the sinkhole on a ruptured underground sewage flow. Sinkholes are caused by changing geological conditions or by a failure to maintain aging underground pipes and sewage systems, but the common factor in both is usually water. Ground underlain with carbonate bedrock – limestone for example – is most prone to sinking because the bedrock erodes with repeated exposure to water. The rock corrodes and the sediment swells with water and eventually everything reaches a critical mass point. The sinkhole phenomenon appears to be intensifying all over the world as ground water continues to face depletion and earthquakes weaken substrata layers of earth.

Scientists are also finding sinkholes are occurring even in places where no humans are present. In the Jaua-Sarisariñama National Park in Venezuela are some of the largest sinkholes in the world. The sinkholes are 350 meters wide and 350 meters deep and are a geological mystery. The huge vertical walls have created an isolated ecosystem, with completely unique species of both flora and fauna. They’re so isolated in fact, that the sinkholes were only discovered in 1974. The scientific expedition was documented in David Nott’s book “into the lost world.”

Mysterious Glowing Lights:The Hassdalen Lights (Hassdalen Norway)

The Hessdalen Lights are unexplained lights usually seen in the valley of Hessdalen, Norway. These lights are well known and have been recorded and studied by physicists from around the world. One explanation attributes the phenomenon to an incompletely understood combustion process in the air involving clouds of dust from the valley floor containing scandium. Some sightings, though, have been identified as misperceptions of astronomical bodies, aircraft, car headlights, and mirages. Scientists say the Hassdalen phenomenon is anything but supernatural and is likely one more sign pointing to increasing seismic pressures on tectonic plates. They argued that the enormous energies built up in tectonic strain, even without actual release in earthquakes, were sufficient to produce glowing, ionized, light-forms in the atmosphere above such areas. Bodies of water, especially reservoirs, could also produce strain on underlying geology. Over subsequent years, Canadian scientist Michael Persinger and the US geologist John Derr, together and individually, examined specific “windows” of recurring reported light phenomena, and amassed an impressive body of data to support this “tectonic strain” theory.

Weather Anomalies: Apocalyptic Freak Hailstorm (Austria July 23, 2009)

"It looked like a biblical plague. I've never seen anything like this," said one resident.

Hundreds of deer were discovered either dead or so badly injured they had to be put down by wildlife experts. In the country's rural Salzburg province, 90 per cent of pheasants and 80 per cent of hares were killed in the hail storms. Sepp Eder, the hunting chief, said : "Animals sought shelter in farms, in fields of grain but the hail was so heavy it smashed right into them. It may take five years for animal numbers to recover, if they ever do so." Farmers are believed to have suffered more than £60 million in damages to crops and buildings.

OMG!!!! WE had a baby born at our hospital 2 or 3 weeks ago with the EXACT polydactyly--that is on ALL extremities (VERY rare!)--and we are only about 50 or so miles south of Daly City! I SOOOO gotta call the Pedi's at work tonight!

It is definitely another occurrence. I was the baby-nurse on the c-section delivery @ our hospital, and the parents names are completely different than the ones in the article. I tried looking @ on-line archives of the local news papers and the local delivery wasn't covered as 'news'. But in the case I handled, the Pedi was quite surprised because this child's extra digits were fully formed/funcional as--judging from the above article--were the child's in Daly City. I report to work today at 1500 and plan to discuss it with the Pedi that handled the case. I'll update if there is anything further.

Strange Atmospheric Phenomena: What’s happening to the sky?

The Spirit in the Sky

Strange new cloud patterns, halo discs around the Sun, mysterious pillars of light that tower up to the sky- No, this isn’t the latest alien planet on Battlestar Galactica- it’s what unfolding in the skies above the Earth. Increased levels of CO2 gases, rising cosmic radiation levels, melting glacial systems, microwave radiation, pollution and changes in the world’s oceans are all causative agents that are accelerating the evolution of Earth’s atmosphere. We are witnessing the birth of a new sky. What will be the long-term effects of such change on the over-all health of the planet? Scientists are unsure and it still may be too early to tell, however; scientists are convinced that there's a human element involved in the process that is morphing Earth's atmosphere and contributing to some of the recent changes in global weather patterns. Strange cloud formations and bizarre weather phenomenon may be just some of the tell tale signs of a planetary system that may be on the brink of evolution. Humans have always had an impact on planetary ecology but never before have the effects been more noticable on the biosphere. Our atmosphere is evolving before our very eyes. The skies are riddled with a kaliescope of new phenomenon and maybe, just maybe; Who knows? Maybe even stranger things await us in the future.

A super-cell is a thunderstorm that is characterized by the presence of a meso-cyclone; a deep, continuously-rotating updraft. The largest, strongest and longest-lasting thunderstorms have an appropriate name: "super-cells." They are capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, and dangerous bursts of wind or flash floods as well as lightning, which is a danger in all thunderstorms. These storms are characterized by rotating winds rising into the storm called a "meso-cyclone." Meso-cyclones help give super-cells their destructive power and also help the storms hold together for hours as they create a path of destruction along the ground. Super-cells spawn most of the killer tornadoes in the United States. Super-cell thunderstorms are known to spawn tornadoes with winds exceeding 200 mph (322 kph).They can also bring hail more than three quarters of an inch in diameter and non-tornado winds faster than 57 mph. Super-cells are often isolated from other thunderstorms, and can dominate the local climate up to 20 miles (32 km) away. Global storm intensity as well as the frequency of occurrence around the world appears to be increasing. Warming oceans, solar fluxes, and pollution may be factors that maybe increasing the intensity of these dangerous storms.

Meteorological Anomalies: Unusual cloud pattern spotted around the world (Russia October 2009)

In mid October of 2009 when this cloud appeared over Moscow, the you tube video of the event created an internet frenzy. UFO speculation was rampant. It turns out the Moscow sighting is a mysterious new cloud phenomenon called, for lack of a better meteorological term, a punch hole cloud. The origins of punch hole clouds like this one is still the subject of much meteorological speculation. No one knows exactly what causes them. A leading hypothesis holds that the punch hole cloud is caused by falling ice-crystals. The ice-crystals could originate in a higher cloud or be facilitated by a passing airplane exhaust. If the air has just the right temperature and moisture content, the falling crystals will absorb water from the air and grow. For this to happen, the water must be so cold that all it needs is a surface to freeze on. The moisture lost from the air increases the evaporation rate from the cloud water droplets so they dissipate to form the hole. The now heavier ice crystals continue to fall and form the more tenuous wispy cloud-like virga seen inside and just below the hole. Water and ice from the virga evaporates before they reach the ground. There are other hypotheses for what causes them: jet planes passing through the cloud layer, wind, and others. But they remain an enigmatic example of just how much Earth’s atmosphere is evolving.

On December 11, 2003 that’s exactly what happened along the central Gulf Coast. A remarkably circular and persistent Hole Punch cloud formed over Mobile, Alabama at lunchtime. Numerous curious people photographed it. The event was so much a topic of conversation that it was the top local news story of the day.

Suicide Phenomenon: Unususal behavioral trends

4 suicides in six months baffles community: 4 teens throw themselves in path of speeding train

Too often this year the Silicon Valley commuter train that roars through affluent Palo Alto has become a terrible solution for troubled teenagers. The suicide on the tracks this week of a 16-year-old is the fourth in the past six months. All were enrolled in the same school, Palo Alto's top-rated Gunn High, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone.

Last night some 400 anxious parents gathered at a community meeting. "It's more than a coincidence now and I almost wonder if it's starting to become like a siren call to kids who are in this area who are not feeling well," said parent Ann Hillen. But the search for ways to stop it has been going on since the first suicide in May. "It is a cruel irony that despite all these efforts and our increasingly strong committee outreach on this topic, we haven't yet found a solution," said Palo Alto School District Superintendent Kevin Skelly. Many worry that each suicide is planting seeds for the next. "Some of the students are saying it's more of a trend thing because you can totally see kids are getting a lot of attention from this," said Mathew Im, a senior at Gunn High School. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that as many as 5 per cent of teenage suicides occur in clusters. The Palo Alto deaths all happened near the same rail crossing.

"With everybody jumping in front of a train, with all the suiciders doing that, I think that does suggest there is that phenomenon at work," said Dr. Stuart Lustig, a child psychiatrist at UC San Francisco. The news media generally don't report suicides but when the string of tragedies in Palo Alto sparked local news coverage there was criticism that the reporting could bring more copycat deaths. "By showing video of the passing train, the loud train steaming down its corridor, we make that more accessible in the minds of someone else who's feeling troubled or feeling depressed," said Dan Ryan of the Palo Alto Police Department. Local media even got letters from the Annenberg Public Policy Center. "We're not saying censor the news but we're asking the news media to think a little harder about what they report because by reporting it they could be perpetuating the story," said Annenberg's Dan Romer. A community is wondering whether more information will bring difficult issues out of the shadows or just bring more tragedy.
